A record crowd descends on Wisconsin

Every summer, a patch of farmland in Oshkosh, Wisconsin turns into one of the busiest airports on the planet for a week, and this year it outdid itself. Organizers with the Experimental Aircraft Association say roughly 734,000 people passed through the gates of AirVenture between July 16 and July 27, edging past last year's total of around 704,000 and marking the second straight year the event has set a new high water mark.

For a show that started decades ago as a modest gathering of homebuilt plane enthusiasts, that kind of growth says a lot about how much staying power aviation still has as a hobby, a career path, and honestly just a spectacle worth traveling for. People came from 98 different countries to be part of it, which is a wild stat for an event that unfolds on one regional airfield.

The sky itself was doing overtime

The numbers on the ground were impressive, but the numbers in the air might be even more fun to picture. More than 10,000 aircraft flew into the greater Oshkosh area for the week, and Wittman Regional Airport alone logged over 15,500 takeoffs and landings, averaging around 101 arrivals and departures every hour the field was open. That is basically a runway that never got a break.

Nearly 2,900 showplanes lined the grounds for people to walk through and admire, spanning everything from vintage classics and warbirds to homebuilt kit planes, seaplanes, ultralights, and even a handful of hot air balloons. Add in more than a thousand commercial exhibitors and upwards of 1,600 forums and presentations spread across dozens of venues, and you get a sense of just how packed a single week at Oshkosh really is.

Volunteers are the real engine behind the scenes

None of this happens without an army of people who show up for the love of it. Around 6,000 volunteers put in something close to 300,000 hours across the week, handling everything from parking thousands of camping aircraft to running forums and keeping the grounds moving. More than 13,000 aircraft and drive in camping spots filled up, along with tens of thousands of camping visitors who essentially turned the airport into a temporary city.

EAA's chief executive Jack Pelton put the milestone in perspective without letting it go to anyone's head, saying the group's real focus stays fixed elsewhere. "Our goal each year is not to chase numbers," he noted, pointing instead to the mission of getting more everyday people excited about flight. It is a good reminder that the record is a nice side effect of doing the community part right, not the point of the exercise.
